The temple was started as an initiative to provide shade to the lives of beggars who had come expecting help from the faith community associated with the Maramon Convention. In 1944, the Evangelistic preaching group decided to start a temple to permanently house and minister to the destitute under the responsibility of the Maramon Convention. Under the leadership of The Vicar General is Divyasree. K.E.Oommen Kassheesha, P.T. Thomas, Poozhikala, Sr. C.M. Chacko Kalamannil and Sr. Kochoichan in Charivukala, a land was found and purchased for the Mar Thoma Evangelistic Association in Chennamala, Kumbanat. On 22nd February 1948, His Excellency Yuhanon Marthoma Metropolitan officially inaugurated the Dharmagiri Mandiram. In 1949, sheds were built for the residents and servants to live in. In 1950, Sr. M.K. Varghese took charge as a servant in the Mandiram. The prayers and love of many helped in the growth of the Mandiram. The Dharmagiri Mandiram, which has completed 75 years, also has a Pain Palliative Home.
The Ayroor Carmel Mandir, owned by the Malankara Marthoma Suvishesaprasangam, is an institution that was started on October 4, 1953, by two people from the Front in Need Society, which was established to help the suffering people of Ayiroor village when poverty increased after World War II. The activities are spread across four levels: Carmel Mandir, Balika Bhavan, Ashram, and Pain & Palliative Center.
